It's always seemed kind of cumbersome to have to remove the card from the camera then insert it into a card reader, then put the card back in the camera. I wait until they're transferred to the PC. I don't ever view the photos while they'e still on the card. I'm simply transferring photos from my camera to my PC. On the other hand I don't look at it as using it as a card reader. So, I have to delete the photos using the menu system on the camera or reformatting the card.

It is different than other cameras in that I can't use CTRL-X to move the files to my PC which deletes them from the card. I simply connect my 20D to my PC via a USB cable use Windows Explorer (Press CTRL-C and then CTRL-V) to copy the files to my PC. I installed the Canon software on my PC but I never use it. I can't see the point in using a $1400 camera as a card reader.

If you have other cards, youi can install a second card in your camera while reading the first and be ready to shoot while downloading the first card. Just pop the card out of the camera, insert it in the reader and it's seen as a hard drive attached to your PC (at least with WindowsXP), I think Mac offers similar interface.

I have one permanantly attached to my desktop at home and a second in the camera bag, should I care to download while away from home.įor a USB 2.0 reader, the SanDisk 12 in 1 seems to be a favorite and will download a 2 GB 10MB/Sec card in 3-5 minutes (your mileage may vary) What I do use is an inexpensive USB card reader - they're available from a number of vendors starting at around US$10 - and going for as much as about $40, depending on the maker and features. Seems pointless to connect to the camera, run down the camera battery (at least to some point) and have the camera tethered to the PC. Although I've loaded the Canon application for pulling pictures directly from the camera, I've never used the program.
